What Is a Croton Oil Peel?

A croton oil peel is a type of chemical peel that uses croton oil to remove the top layers of skin cells, triggering an inflammatory response in the skin to encourage collagen and elastin production as the skin heals.

Designed to address advanced signs of aging including fine lines and wrinkles, uneven texture, dark spots, and even pre-cancerous lesions, a croton oil peel can help turn back the clock with just one treatment. This powerful chemical peel works to resurface the skin, stripping away layers of dead, dull cells and stimulating your skin’s natural healing process to generate new collagen and elastin. The newly revealed skin is smoother, softer, and more supple.

At Results Medical Spa, we offer a variety of chemical peels to effectively improve skin’s appearance and texture. These peels are designed to treat the upper layers of the skin, making them effective at treating early signs of aging for ongoing skin rejuvenation. A croton oil peel is a much more aggressive peel that treats the deeper layers of the skin, thus requiring it to be administered under general anesthesia.

During your treatment, your provider will use an applicator to apply the croton oil to the skin. She will apply several layers of oil to treat each area of the face to achieve the desired result. As the croton oil works, it triggers an inflammatory response in the skin, triggering your body’s healing response. After treatment, your provider will apply a soothing, anti-bacterial mask to protect the skin as it heals.

This powerful peel typically requires 2-4 weeks for recovery when used to treat the whole face. When it is performed on smaller areas, such as under the eyes, it can be performed under local anesthesia and has a shorter recovery period.

What Can a Croton Oil Peel Treat?

A croton oil peel is designed to treat an array of skin conditions and signs of aging, including:

  • Stubborn lines and wrinkles around the mouth and eyes and on the forehead and cheeks
  • Sun spots and dark spots
  • Lax, sagging skin
  • Uneven texture and tone

For patients bothered by the appearance of scars and other skin conditions, a croton oil peel may be appropriate to treat:

  • Acne scars
  • Actinic keratoses (AKs)
  • Pre-cancerous lesions

Thanks to its powerful ingredients, a croton oil peel works to effectively reverse the signs of aging more effectively than other chemical peel treatments. The results are long-lasting and noticeable.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Croton Oil Peel?

Patients who have advanced signs of aging, including lines and wrinkles, skin laxity, uneven pigmentation, and have time to dedicate to recovery. Patients with deep lines around the mouth and eyes and on the forehead are considered appropriate candidates for this treatment. Croton peels are most effective on lighter skinned patients but can be effective for patients of all skin types.

Due to the ablative nature of the croton oil peel, Dr. Collins does not recommend this type of chemical peel for patients with darker skin due to the potential for scarring and skin darkening.

Since this procedure requires general anesthesia, patients must be in good overall health and should not be pregnant or breastfeeding. During your consultation, your provider will perform a full health assessment and will make a recommendation for the appropriate skin treatment to suit your needs and goals.

While a croton oil peel is ideal for treating a variety of aging skin conditions, we may recommend a combination of treatments, including laser skin resurfacing, chemical peels, and skin tightening to achieve the best results for your goals and lifestyle.

What Is Recovery Like After a Croton Oil Peel?

Immediately following your croton oil peel, your skin will feel tight and warm, with noticeable redness and sensitivity. Your provider will apply special dressings to protect the newly revealed skin as you heal to protect from infection. You will be given detailed care instructions to follow after your treatment to improve comfort and recovery throughout the healing process.

You should avoid sun exposure for at least 4 weeks following treatment and should apply a high SPF sunscreen to the treated area once your skin has healed.

As your skin starts to heal, the old skin cells will peel away, resulting in flaky skin with some redness. You will be provided with skincare products to address redness, dryness, and irritation to help minimize your discomfort and improve healing. Once the old skin has peeled away, you may experience some redness, which can be easily covered with makeup as your skin continues to heal.

After several weeks, your skin will be completely healed, revealing a tighter, brighter, more youthful appearance!
